PLAY THERAPY
-
What is Play Therapy?
Play therapy is a therapeutic modality meeting children at their level to bring about change and healing. Children communicate through play. They express, process, develop and heal through play.
During a session, child clients can play out major events, such as parents’ divorce or the birth of a new sibling, using doll families and houses, baby dolls, and toy animals. Play is the “language” which children use, while toys are their “words”(Landreth, 2012).
-
How will Play Therapy help my child?
Become more responsible for behaviors and develop more successful strategies and coping skills.
Develop respect, acceptance, and empathy of self and others.
Learn to experience, identify and express emotion.
Learn new social skills and relational skills with family.
Develop self-esteem, trust in self and others.
-
What can Play Therapy treat?
Play therapy is effective in treating disorders like depression, anxiety, and ADHD, as well as helping with learning and physical disabilities.
Additionally, it’s useful in addressing conduct disorders and autism and helping to manage behavioral problems that commonly result from divorce, grief, trauma, and anger.
-
What age is appropriate for Play Therapy?
Play therapy is most appropriate for children between the ages of three and twelve. I will assess the developmental level of your child to determine the best treatment modality.
-
How long does Play Therapy take?
It depends on your child. It is recommended with weekly sessions. Research indicate an average of 20 play therapy sessions to support and resolve identified conerns. However, sometimes it takes less sessions, or longer with more serious problems.
-
What is a typical Play Therapy session like?
I strategically utilize play therapy to help children express what is troubling them when they do not have the verbal language to express their thoughts and feelings. I track, reflect and model feelings and behaviors. I support the child in regulating emotion, respond to limit setting and lean new coping skills. The therapeutic reltionshp is essential in inviting change to take place!
EMDR
for children, teens and adults
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy that help clients recover from trauma and other distressing life events.
How does it work?
It encourages clients to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Click here for a demonstration and more information.
What can EMDR treat?
It can be a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences.
“Processing” in EMDR
"Processing" does not mean talking about a traumatic experience, rather setting up a learning state that will allow experiences causing problems to be "digested" and stored appropriately in your brain.
The inappropriate emotions, beliefs, and body sensations from a stored memory will be discarded. The goal of EMDR therapy is to leave you with the emotions, understanding, and perspectives that will lead to healthy and useful behaviors and interactions.

Parenting & Family Counseling
-
You are experiencing disconnection in your family. Maybe frequent disagreements, different parenting styles, blended families that don’t blend well, or calls from teachers regarding your child’s behavior?
Maybe you have experienced recent changes to the family dynamic; loss, divorce, financial stressors, and you are not sure how to navigate this new situation?
-
Family counseling and parenting can be very effective because, rather than working with individual family members in isolation, the process includes everyone.
It can enhance understanding, build connnection and implement effective solutions to restore family balance. When everyone has the opportunity to share, it can strengthen bonds and diminish resentment, judgment and invite growth.
